What Is Prebid (Prebid.js)?

Prebid.js is the leading open-source header bidding wrapper, letting publishers run one unified auction across multiple ad exchanges at once.

Editorial illustration: What Is Prebid (Prebid.js)?

Prebid, most commonly encountered as Prebid.js, is an open-source header bidding wrapper that lets a publisher run a single, unified auction across multiple ad exchanges and demand-side platforms before the page finishes loading. Instead of waking bidders up one at a time in a waterfall, Prebid asks all of them to bid simultaneously and passes the winning price into the page's ad server call.

Why publishers adopted it#

Before header bidding, publishers ran a waterfall: ad slots got offered to demand sources in a fixed priority order, and a lower-ranked bidder never got the chance to beat a higher-ranked one on price for that specific impression. Prebid opened that up, letting every connected demand source compete for the same impression on equal footing, which generally lifts yield versus a strict waterfall. It's free, maintained by the Prebid.org open-source community, and has become close to a default for programmatic publishers running header bidding.

How it fits the supply chain#

Prebid.js runs client-side, in the visitor's browser, coordinating bid requests to multiple supply-side platforms and ad exchanges before returning the highest bid to the page's primary ad server (commonly Google Ad Manager). A server-side variant, Prebid Server, moves that auction logic off the browser to reduce latency and page weight. Either way, the winning bid still flows through the same ad supply chain reporting that a SupplyChain object (schain) and sellers.json file exist to make auditable.

Where it shows up for native and display buyers#

Prebid itself operates on the publisher and supply-side platform side of the transaction, not something an advertiser configures directly. But it matters to media buyers because it affects who they're actually bidding against and how real-time bidding reaches a final price on any given page. Buyers researching a publisher's ad exchange footprint sometimes find Prebid's header-bidding tags in a page's source, one signal of how competitive that inventory's auction actually is; combining that with a captured view of which advertisers are actually winning impressions there, via something like OpenAdLibrary's ad intelligence index, gives a fuller picture of a publisher's real value.

A note on native specifically#

Native networks like Taboola, Outbrain, and MGID mostly run their own proprietary auctions rather than plugging into a Prebid wrapper, since native placements are typically sold through the network's direct API rather than through the header-bidding path that display and video use. That said, a single page can carry both: a Prebid-driven display unit in the sidebar and a native content-discovery widget in the article feed, each running a completely separate auction under the same URL. Understanding which mechanism serves a given slot matters when a page's ad load looks heavier or lighter than expected.

Related terms: Header Bidding, Real-Time Bidding (RTB), and Supply-Side Platform (SSP).

Frequently asked questions

Is Prebid the same as header bidding?
Prebid.js is one implementation of header bidding, specifically the leading open-source wrapper. Header bidding is the general auction technique; Prebid is the most widely adopted tool for running it.
Do advertisers need to configure Prebid?
No. Prebid runs on the publisher and supply-side platform side of the transaction. Advertisers and media buyers don't set it up themselves, though it affects the auction dynamics they're bidding into.
Is Prebid free?
Yes, Prebid.js and Prebid Server are open-source and maintained by the nonprofit Prebid.org, funded by member companies rather than licensing fees to individual publishers.
Does Prebid work for native ad placements?
Prebid is most associated with display and video header bidding. Native inventory sold through networks like Taboola, Outbrain, or MGID typically runs its own direct-API auction rather than routing through a Prebid wrapper.

Ad intelligence & native advertising research

We build OpenAdLibrary, the open ad-transparency platform. Every day our systems capture live native ads across Taboola, Outbrain, MGID, Revcontent, Teads, Yahoo and MSN, identify the real advertiser behind each one, and follow the click to its landing page. These guides distill what we see in that data so you can research the market faster.
