Which Ad Networks Does MSN Use? A Publisher Monetization Profile
MSN's native feed runs on the Microsoft Audience Network — but resold partner demand fills a slice of it too. Here is the click-chain evidence, plus the five-step method for profiling any publisher's ad networks.

MSN's ads come almost entirely from one demand source: the Microsoft Audience Network (MSAN), Microsoft's own native advertising platform. It fills the sponsored cards in the MSN feed, the Windows Start experience and the Microsoft Edge new-tab page, and it runs on the Xandr ad stack Microsoft acquired in 2022 — which is why MSN ad clicks route through adnxs.com infrastructure. But "one network" is not the whole answer. A slice of MSN's feed inventory is filled by demand partners reselling into Microsoft's auction, which means ads bought on other networks surface on MSN pages too. This article breaks down what actually serves on MSN, the click-chain evidence behind that answer, and how to run the same monetization analysis on any publisher you care about.
The primary layer: Microsoft Audience Network#
The Microsoft Audience Network is the buying platform behind MSN's native placements. Advertisers set up audience campaigns inside Microsoft Advertising — the same console that sells Bing search ads — and those campaigns serve image-based native cards across Microsoft's owned-and-operated surfaces: MSN.com and its dozens of international editions, the Windows Start and widgets feed, Edge's new-tab page, plus a tail of syndication partners.
Three fingerprints tell you MSAN served a given card, and all of them are observable from the outside:
- Creatives load from Microsoft's own image CDN. MSN serves native ad images as neutral
bing.com/th?id=OADD…URLs rather than from a recognizable ad domain. Scrapers that look for "ad-looking" markup miss them completely. - Clicks wrap through adnxs.com. That is Xandr's domain. The real destination is buried inside an encoded parameter on the click URL; decode it and you get the advertiser's landing page plus any intermediate tracking hops.
- The cards render inside shadow DOM. MSN's feed placements live in open shadow roots that a plain HTML fetch never sees. If you view source and find no ads, that is a measurement artifact — the page is full of them.

The second layer: resold demand from partner networks#
Unwrap enough MSN click chains and a second pattern shows up: campaigns that were never bought inside Microsoft Advertising at all. The redirect passes from the adnxs wrapper through a different ad network's click tracker before it reaches the advertiser's landing page. That is resold inventory — a demand partner filling Microsoft's auction with campaigns its own advertisers bought elsewhere.
Two practical consequences follow:
- Advertisers appear on MSN without ever targeting it. Buy from a network that resells into MSAN and your ads can serve on MSN surfaces you never selected. If you are auditing where your budget actually lands, the publisher-level reporting inside your buying platform will not show you this — the click chain will.
- "Which networks does this publisher use" needs click-level evidence. The widget markup tells you who rendered the slot. Only the redirect chain tells you whose demand filled it, and those are frequently different companies. The native ad supply chain, explained traces this end to end with real captures.
MSN has also run third-party content-recommendation partnerships at various points in its history, and deals like that come and go. The durable way to answer "who serves MSN right now" is not a press release from two years ago — it is unwrapping today's click chains and seeing which trackers actually appear.
What MSN's ad inventory looks like at scale#
MSN is the single largest network bucket in OpenAdLibrary's index: roughly 282,000 live creatives as of June 2026, ahead of Taboola (about 206,000) and Outbrain (about 109,000). Two things stand out in that corpus.

Compare that with mid-tier native networks, where entertainment and arbitrage content dominate the mix, and MSAN reads closer to a brand-adjacent channel: Amazon's international storefronts, consumer security suites, travel packages, retail finance offers. There is still plenty of aggressive direct-response creative in the feed — it is a native network — but the center of gravity is different.
It is heavily international. A large share of MSN captures are non-English — German, Spanish, Portuguese and more — reflecting MSN's per-country editions and Microsoft Advertising's geo reach. If you are researching a specific market, filter to that geo; the advertiser mix changes substantially by country.
The inventory also skews durable. Several of the longest-running creatives in the entire index are Microsoft Audience Network placements — retirement-finance, home-services and hearing-care offers that had been serving continuously for 38+ days at capture (June 2026). Long runs on paid placements are a strong hint the economics work, which makes MSN a productive place to look for proven angles, not just a distribution curiosity.

How to profile any publisher's ad networks#
The same analysis generalizes to any site. Five checks, in the order a practitioner actually runs them:
- Read the rendered page, not the source. Load the site with dev tools open and inspect the ad slots in the element tree. Widget fingerprints — container IDs, script hosts, CSS namespaces — identify the rendering network. Remember the MSN lesson: check for shadow roots before concluding a page is ad-free.
- Unwrap a click without clicking. Copy the ad's href and follow the redirect chain with a tool rather than clicking live ads (clicking costs the advertiser money and poisons their data). Each hop in the chain is a company in the money flow. This is the single highest-signal check — how to identify the ad network behind any ad walks through it hop by hop.
- Read ads.txt.
publisher.com/ads.txtlists who is authorized to sell the publisher's inventory, with DIRECT versus RESELLER relationships (ads.txt). Caveat: authorization is not activity — ads.txt files accrete entries over years and rarely get pruned, so treat the file as an upper bound. - Cross-check sellers.json and the schain. The sell side declares itself in sellers.json files, and the SupplyChain object inside bid requests documents each resale hop. Together they corroborate — or contradict — what the redirect chain showed you.
- Check an independent index over time. A single visit answers "who filled this slot for me, today, from my IP." Networks fill differently by geo, device and time of day, so a picture built from weeks of observations is the reliable one — who is buying ads on a website covers that workflow.
Run those five checks against MSN itself and you get the answer this article opened with: shadow-DOM cards served from Microsoft's CDN (check 1), adnxs click wrappers that sometimes contain a second network's tracker (check 2), and Microsoft-controlled sell-side declarations (checks 3–4) — a first-party platform with a resold layer inside it. Pitfalls worth naming: ads.txt overstates (stale authorizations linger), page markup understates (resold demand is invisible in widget code), and any single-geo check misses geo-gated networks entirely.
