Brand Protection in Advertising — ad-tech glossary illustration

Brand protection in advertising is the practice of monitoring and defending a brand against impersonation, trademark misuse, deceptive ads, and copycat campaigns that exploit its name, logo, or reputation. Where brand safety is about keeping your own ads in clean environments, brand protection is about stopping bad actors from misusing your brand in theirs.

How it works#

Protection programs scan ad networks and publisher inventory for unauthorized use of brand assets, fake endorsements, and scam offers that ride on a trusted name. A common abuse pattern combines Ad Cloaking, which hides the real destination from reviewers and crawlers, with a Copycat Landing Page that mimics the legitimate brand's site to capture conversions or payment details. Teams catch these by capturing live native ads at scale, identifying the true advertiser behind each creative, and tracing each click through to its final landing page.

Why it matters#

Impersonation drains revenue, exposes customers to fraud, and shifts the cleanup cost onto the brand being copied. Detecting it requires visibility into ads as real users see them, not just the polished version shown to ad-platform reviewers. Ad-transparency tooling that reveals advertiser identity and full redirect paths is central to a working brand-protection workflow. Ad intelligence & native advertising research

We build OpenAdLibrary, the open ad-transparency platform. Every day our systems capture live native ads across Taboola, Outbrain, MGID, Revcontent, Teads, Yahoo and MSN, identify the real advertiser behind each one, and follow the click to its landing page. These guides distill what we see in that data so you can research the market faster.
