Affiliate Network

An affiliate network is a marketplace that connects advertisers and affiliates, hosting offers, tracking conversions, and handling payouts.

Affiliate Network — ad-tech glossary illustration

An affiliate network is a marketplace that connects advertisers who have offers with affiliates who can drive traffic to them. The network hosts the offers, provides tracking links, records clicks and conversions, and handles payouts, sitting in the middle so neither side has to manage the relationship one by one.

For advertisers, a network provides reach to many publishers and affiliates without building individual deals. For affiliates, it provides a catalog of vetted offers across multiple verticals, a single tracking dashboard, and consolidated payments. The network typically takes a margin or fee for facilitating and guaranteeing the transactions.

How it works: when an affiliate joins, they get access to offers and generate unique tracking links carrying a click ID. As users convert, the advertiser fires a postback to the network, which credits the right affiliate. The network reconciles conversions, deducts disputed or fraudulent leads, and pays affiliates on a set schedule.

Why it matters: networks also enforce compliance, screening offers, monitoring for cloaking and misleading creatives, and removing bad actors, though enforcement quality varies widely. Choosing a reputable network affects payout reliability, offer quality, and how much risk an affiliate carries.

Note that an affiliate network differs from an ad network: the ad network sells traffic, while the affiliate network connects you to the offers you monetize that traffic with.

Related terms: a network is the catalog where you find each Affiliate Offer, it underpins the broader practice of Affiliate Marketing, and the brand behind an offer is the Advertiser.
